Teacher's Gift

I decided that it was time to finish Timothy's teacher's gift! I know she loves coffee and drinks it every day. I learned this from Timothy when he got off the bus going on and on and on about how his teacher spilled coffee all over the floor and all over one of the students. The student's mother even had to bring in fresh clothes. It was a big day in second grade!

I thought a coffee mug rug would be perfect. Hopefully she won't spill on it! I used my coffee cup linocut which seemed fitting and I found some coffee spoons to round out the gift. I hope she will like it.

Hedgie in Falling Snow!

I have been planning to make these prints since the fall when I first introduced you to Hedgie in Falling Leaves! Finally, I carved the little one and a quarter inch snowflake that had been holding me up and began printing.

We have Hedgie with red snowflakes to coordinate with all those red Christmas and winter fabrics out there.

And there is the more traditional Hedgie with blue snowflakes.

And finally, I printed Hedgie on natural linen with both white and red snowflakes, some overlapping. The white doesn't show up very well on linen but combined with the red snowflakes, it adds nice depth.
I just put a few of these prints in my shop. I am planning to make a pillow cover with the print I am keeping for our family. There are still a couple of fall Hedgies left too!
I have also experimented a little with just printing the snowflake repeatedly on fabric and love the results.

Penguin Ornaments

I made more ornaments! This time it was penguins.

I was inspired by a scrap of Michael Miller Clown Check in Black and White from a scrap bag I purchased awhile back. Actually, the solid black material is from the same scrap bag!

The penguins are backed in various black and white prints and have little dangly felt feet.

I also made a few more owls. I couldn't resist.

While I am making these ornaments mainly for gifts, I have just put a few in my shop and will be adding a few birds tomorrow once I photograph them individually.

Another Custom Mini

Remember the mini quilt I showed you a few days ago? The same customer asked me to make another custom mini for her son. She requested a design similar to the quilt I made for a recent baby shower gift but measuring 15" x 15". And, in place of animals, she wanted cars and trains. Her son is about 4, I believe, and he likes blue with touches of other boyish colors like red, green and yellow.

I ended up making three rows of 5" squares. The borders are just 3/4" wide so the squares within are 3 1/2." The appliques had to be TINY!!

It was a sewing challenge to simplify my designs for each square to the point where I could neatly applique them. I am happy with the results though! I had fun embellishing with all sorts of buttons for wheels. I hope he loves it!

"Cookies for Santa"

One of my blog readers gave me the terrific idea to make a cookies for Santa mug rug!

Here is what I came up with. I went for a traditional look so that it could become a part of some family's tradition...a mug rug that they pull out each year for Santa on Christmas Eve! The center is a linocut print of a pair of gingerbread men with a raw edge applique heart. I free motion quilted "Cookies for Santa" on a piece of linen and dotted the "I" with a glass bead.
I know, you are more interested in those cookies right? They are one of my favorites and I just put a batch in the freezer for Christmas. Have you tried Chocolate Crackles? Yum!

Joy is...

completing Michele's Great Tissue Box Challenge 2010! Michele challenged her readers to create as many little houses as they could from a standard tissue box and embellish them. Quality is as important as quantity. That's my kind of challenge!

My husband helped me design a template to maximize the use of space. He loves that sort of thing. I requested a church complete with steeple, a Federal style house with hip roof, a barn that looks like ours, a town house and a tiny house. I used a bit more cardboard for the larger houses but I was going for quality there. I finished up with lots of tiny houses to maximize quantity! One run in with the X-Acto knife, another with the hot glue gun, and several hours later, I complete 18 houses. I had scraps enough to make up some more house but my templates could no longer be used and I felt defeated by the box!

My first eight houses have a modern Christmas feel. I used sour green, petal pink and white paints. The windows and doors were cut from stickers and carefully stuck in place. I used some sequins from my daughter's crafting stash for wreaths (don't tell!). Then I had some fun with a product called Snow Writer by DecoArt. It gives a three dimensional snow effect. I used it around the bottoms of the houses so it looks like they are sitting in snow. Then I covered the roofs in glue and sprinkled crystal fine glitter all over them for a snow effect!

Here is the modern Christmas village all together.

Here is a little close up of the church, my favorite.

Then I created 10 little gingerbread houses. I painted them brown and once again used the Snow Writer product but this time to mimic icing. I placed little red and white glass beads while it was still wet to look like the candies. Again, I used glitter on the roofs.

I can't decide if they look better displayed on red or white so you get both pictures here! The doors were cut from some Heather Bailey packaging I received with a recent order of felt.
Thank you for the fun challenge Michele!

"Portraits of Alaska" Quilt for Sale

My blogging friend Tiffany is parting with this lovely quilt! Due to her need to move to smaller living quarters, she would like to find this quilt another home where it can be displayed and enjoyed. "Portraits of Alaska" measures 84" x 96" and was designed by Trish Stuart. Tiffany created the blocks using raw edge applique. Materials include cottons, ultrasuede, batiks and Warm & Natural batting. She had the quilt custom quilted by Debbie Kenney of Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company in York, New York.

I chose a couple of my favorite blocks to show in detail!

Tiffany's work is always precise and of the highest quality. I am certain that this quilt would make a magnificent display. I could picture it in an office in Alaska or in the home of someone who, like Tiffany, travelled to Alaska and enjoyed their visit.

Custom Mini Quilt

I received a custom mini quilt order from a faithful blog follower for her seven year old daughter. It will be a Christmas gift. She asked that I make it about 12" x 15" and similar to this one. Her daughter's favorite colors are pink and bright green. I have to say that it is always a treat to work with colors like that because I am partial to them too!

I think that this quilt has a youthful feel but I don't think she will outgrow it any time soon either. I like the addition of rick rack in a few of the seams. I think it makes it look more girly and dainty! She also suggested that I include birds so I fussy cut a couple of squares with birds in them and quilted around them. For another little touch of whimsy, I quilted a heart design in the green block in the upper left. I think most seven year old girls like hearts. I hope she is happy with it this Christmas!

Owl Ornaments

Some years I have a hard time thinking of an ornament design that I like. This year, I have tons of ideas but not enough time! Here is a little group of owls that I made over the weekend. I wanted to make a gift for a friend who has a birthday this week. One of these will be for her, along with something else, yet to be determined!

I went a little overboard with the pictures because I was having fun arranging the owls in their natural habitat.

This was a tricky picture because the wind kept turning the owls and I wanted them all facing me!

This is the one I am keeping for our Christmas tree.

Shop Update

I just wanted to let you know that I have updated the shop with some more Kokeshi doll pincushions. I recently sold out and wanted to add some more for holiday shoppers! This time around, I was in a Heather Bailey mood. The one pictured here is Heather Bailey's "Pop Garden" paired with my Kokeshi doll silkscreen on linen.

I also printed two more panels for Quilting Process Mini Quilt Kits using the popular modern combos of gray and orange, and gray and aqua!

An Early Christmas Present!

I am a lucky, lucky lady. A couple of days ago, I received this beautiful Kanzashi ornament in the mail. It is a Christmas gift from my dear blogging friend Tiffany. I just had to share this picture with you. Isn't her work beautiful? She knew this one was my favorite so she set it aside for me! She taught herself to make these flowers from a book. They are made by folding fabric; which she did oh so carefully and precisely! She first made these flowers over the summer and I remember commenting that they would make lovely Christmas tree decorations. I was simply thinking of hanging them as is. However, she made a batch in all Christmas materials with snowflakes in the center. It is a whole new look and perfect for the tree! Thanks again Tiffany!

Snowflake Linocut Mug Rugs!

I just completed a couple of mug rugs for the shop. These are my first "for sale" mug rugs. I think that they would be adorable with a cup of hot cocoa and a Christmas cookie! I used my snowflake linoleum block and printed it in white ink on a beautiful, soft red linen. I was so excited when I found this material! And it is a perfect match with the 12 Joys of Christmas fabrics by Sherri Berry that I used to piece the tiny zig zags. The zig zag is 2" wide. The backing is Riley Blake's Just Dreamy by My Mind's Eye.

The second post of the day is thanks to Penny who decided to take a morning nap today and give Mommy a much needed break!

Baby Booties!

If you were reading my blog back when I was expecting Penelope, you know that I love making baby booties! I must have made her a half dozen pairs. Well, tomorrow I get to go visit a new born so I thought I should bring him some booties! I made this super adorable (if I do say so myself) pair for baby Tyler. I used some fabric designed by Amy Schimler for Robert Kauffman that I got in a scrap bag for the toes. I fussy cut them using my favorite puppies and arranged things so that the puppies would be facing each other when the baby wears them. I used denim for the remainder of the exterior and cream fleece for the lining. I went out on a limb and used accent thread, like you see on jeans, for the stitching. I worry about doing that because the stitching needs to be so perfect for it to look good!

A local friend is expecting twin baby girls any day now. She needed a pick me up a couple of weeks ago so I made her these booties for her girls. I am happy to report that she loved them and they took her mind of her sciatic pain for a few moments at least!
Here is the link to the free tutorial for the baby booties.

Christmas String Quilt

SewGalCal is hosting a Christmas Quilt Show and I am entering my Christmas String Quilt that I completed around Easter time this year. Since I finished it up in the spring, this will be the first year that we get to pull it out and enjoy it! I am looking forward to that.
I used a variety of scraps of Christmas materials that I had accumulated over the years to make the strings. I cut them in strips measuring 1”, 1 ¼”, 1 ½”, 1 ¾”, 2”, 2 ¼” and 2 ½” wide. I challenged myself while sewing to use the smallest piece possible for each string to keep myself interested! I pretty much depleted my collection of Christmas material. I also used scraps of about 5 different ivory materials including a fine wale corduroy for the center star shapes.

The backing and binding I bought when the material was on sale just after Christmas this past year. The backing is by Faye Burgos for Marcus Fabrics and the binding is Grandma’s Gingerbread by Dianna Marcum. I really love the traditional look of these materials. I wasn’t going for trendy or modern with this quilt but just traditional Christmas; something I would like for years and want to drag out each Christmas.

My finished quilt measures 43 1/2" square prior to washing. I started quilting 1/4” from the seam and then every ½”.

Batch of Bird Ornaments

I was inspired here and here to make some bird ornaments for my tree and for gifts this year. I just finished up this small batch of nine.

As it turns out, Krista has just opened up her Etsy shop and is stocking her bird ornaments! Check it out!

These were fun to make. I found the linen at JoAnns and just really liked the color. I thought it would look nice against the evergreen branches. Then I used bits of wool blend felt for the beaks and wings along with some of my favorite scraps. The wings are attached with odds and ends buttons. I don't believe that any two match!

A Couple of Gift Sets

A couple of Kokeshi doll silk screened needlebook and pincushion sets have been put in the shop!

One set has been marked down a bit due to a slight error in measurement on my part. I made the back cover of one book 1/4" wider than the cover and didn't realize it till it was quilted! I rectified the situation by stitching another row of stitching through the center, creating a sort of spine. But my quality control here at During Quiet Time is such that I had to mark it down. The sets are already a savings over buying a needlebook and pincushion separately so this one is really a bargain!

Potholder Pass 5 Received!

I actually jumped for joy when I saw Rosina's name on the return address of the package I received yesterday. I am not generally a jump for joy type but you will soon understand why I did! First off, she made these beautiful Christmas potholders in my requested color scheme of red, white and linen. There was a bird ornament in my inspirational mosaic that gave her the idea to create this adorable bird applique. I love them. I particularly like the linen material with little red hearts. Isn't it sweet?

Then, there was this ornament, the icing on the cake, the reason for my jump for joy. From the minute that Rosina posted a picture of this ornament on Flickr, I have thought of nothing else! I love it. It's called stump work embroidery and I think it is just amazing and beautiful. It was her first attempt. Can you believe that? I actually contacted her asking if there was anyway she would be willing to make another for a private swap. This must have been so hard for her, knowing that I was about to receive it. She politely wrote back that we could consider it but she had some holiday projects she had to get to first. It sounded completely appropriate to me. She didn't let on at all! I am truly overjoyed to have received this gift from Rosina. The whole package is lovely. The potholders will be for decoration, not use. And the ornament will be hung all winter long where I can look at it every day.

Do you Pin Baste?

I do! Whenever I see safety pins, I think basting.

When I saw this Mrs. Sew & Sew Black Saftey First Pins designed by Dan Morris for RJR Fabrics, I had to get some for this purpose. Sometimes when I print a panel for my Quilting Process Mini Quilt Kits, there isn't quite enough ink or too much and some of the words don't come out well. Rather than tossing them, I have been keeping them to incorporate the good words into projects.

I thought these were fun for all you pin basters out there!
